Constructing the Ultimate PC Based TV Entertainment Center

[ad_1]

You likely already use your TV as a great source for entertainment. You probably also use your computer for a large amount of entertainment. With the combination of a properly configured computer and your TV, you can unleash so much more potential for entertainment and make everything so much easier to access.

Entertainment system will include

At the center of your entertainment system is going to be your TV. I of course would strongly recommend an HDTV to those that can afford it. Also, while size isn’t the only important factor in the quality of an HDTV, I do have to say, bigger is better. For this setup we’ll assume that you have an HDTV that supports HDMI input.

As I mentioned, that TV is great and all, but we’re going to use a computer to make it do so much more for you. So that brings us to the computer you’re going to want. I would strongly recommend a Windows 7 based PC that includes Media Center. If you don’t know what Media Center is, we’ll get to that. The computer should also have a nice video card to ensure that your computer can play high quality HD content without stuttering or being slow. You’ll want to make sure this video card has a built in HDMI port with audio support. This will make it as easy as possible to connect the computer to the HDTV. Also, it usually doesn’t cost much to add a Blu-Ray compatible drive to a computer and it is definitely worth the cash. If you haven’t used Blu-Ray on your HDTV you’re missing out on a true movie watching experience.

In addition to the TV and the Computer you’ll want to make sure you get a Media Center compatible remote for the computer. This will allow you to control everything we’ll install on the computer from the comfort of your couch.

Software and set up

As I mentioned you’ll want to run Media Center on the computer. This will be the base of everything we do on the PC. The reason for this is that it has an interface designed to be controlled with the Media Center remote so you don’t have to have a mouse and keyboard on your lap while doing all of this.

In addition to that you’ll want to install the Netflix Media Center plugin. This will give you access to all of Netflix’s streaming catalog right through media center. This way you can browse, search, and watch anything that Netflix has available. Netflix does require a subscription in order to have access to the streaming material, but it is definitely worth it to have access to all sorts of movies and TV shows instantly.

Another one you’ll want to install is the Hulu desktop application. This application gives you access to the same free streaming content that is found on their website, but it will also work with the media center remote. Hulu does not install itself into the Media Center application, but we can still make it work. You’ll want to use a program like Media Center Studio. Media Center Studio is a free program you can download that will let you make changes to the Media Center menu. Using this you can add a launcher icon for Hulu. Then you can launch Hulu Desktop from Media Center and when you quit the Hulu program it will bring you back.

Media Center does not come with built in support for Blu-Ray movies. If your computer came with a Blu-Ray drive it may have also come with a plugin to add support to Media Center for that. If not, you’ll need to purchase one. There are lots of options available online. Just whatever you purchase, make sure it includes a Windows 7 Media Center compatible plug in. This will ensure that you can control your Blu-Ray movies with that same remote and without having to leave the Media Center software.

The last real step for configuring your computer is to copy your music, video, and photo libraries over to the computer. Assuming the music and videos aren’t protected by non-WMC compatible DRM you will be able to listen to and view any of those files through the Media Center software.

Connect PC without HDMI

Some of you may already have a PC you want to use, or have just picked one up on some killer deal only to find it doesn’t have HDMI. Fear not, you can still connect it to the HDMI port on the TV, with some work. Your options are varied. First you can install a new video card in the computer that has HDMI. This is the best option for older computers that could stand to have an upgraded video card anyway.

Another option is to use a DVI to HDMI cable from any computer that has a DVI video port on it. This will get the video to your TV with no problems at all. Be warned though, that DVI ports do not output audio so you’ll have to run separate audio cables. Hopefully your TV has an input next to one of the HDMI ports on the TV to allow for that.

If your TV has a VGA input, you can simply use a VGA to VGA cable from the VGA port on the computer to the TV. This will work great in most cases. Some TVs don’t support full 1080p through the VGA port, however, so be cautious of that. Also, VGA doesn’t carry audio either so you’ll need to run separate audio cables in this situation also.

Let’s say you’ve got VGA on your computer, but you need to go to HDMI on the TV. You can use a VGA to HDMI signal converter to convert from the analog format to the digital, allowing you to use the full 1080p input of the HDMI port. These converters will generally support sound conversion to put it on the HDMI line which can help a lot in setting it up.

Just whatever you do, DO NOT purchase a VGA to HDMI cable. Those things have been floating all over the web, but they are a scam. VGA is an analog signal and HDMI is digital and you cannot just use a cable to convert from one to the other. If you purchase a cable like that you’ll really just be wasting your money.

Conclusion

Once you have your TV, PC, and remote all connected you’ll be all set to enjoy all these forms of entertainment from a single device. We’re talking viewing Hulu, Netflix, Blu-Rays, DVDs, listening to MP3s, stored video files, pictures and much more all from one device, and all from the comfort of your couch. I have personally been running a set up like the one described here for about 3 years, and it is continually improving as new sources of media come out. This is the ultimate home entertainment device.

Is the Long Island Medium SCRIPTED? Caution! What You Must Know About Psychics on TV

[ad_1]

How accurate are the readings on the Long Island Medium? Do they truly reflect the reality of the readings done, or are they edited to look or appear better than they really are? And are ANY of the TV programs that feature live mediums a good way of gauging how accurate they truly are….or do you need to go and see the psychic in person to know for sure? In this article we take a closer look at both the Long Island Medium TV show, and the truth about how many psychic TV programs (and other reality shows) are produced for the masses. Curious to know more? Continue reading as we take a closer look below!

But first… understand this to be true, because it is:

The psychic featured on the show, Theresa Caputo, has had a long history of offering some amazing readings in some pretty public places, WELL before she became well known, famous and a household name based on the TV show. As a matter of fact, as someone who publishes lots of information in the psychic “space”, I heard her on the radio many times when she was a relative unknown Long Island psychic medium, and her live appearances on the “Forever Family Foundations” website (a non profit organization that offers help to grieving families who have lost a loved one) always intrigued me as as result of her accuracy.

So she had already demonstrated a level of psychic ability beyond the average, even for professional mediums, and this certainly contributed to her appeal and rapid growth in psychic stature and popularity.

Next, understand THIS to be true as well… because it is!

TV is a very difficult medium (no pun intended!) to judge when it comes to “reality” of any kind. You have to remember that the people who push and publish these programs are about the 3 critical bottom line metrics for successful television – viewers, advertisers and dollars. They aren’t interested in how accurate (or honest) the readings are, nor are they concerned if editing the readings Ms. Caputo offers are done in a way that satisfies psychic believers OR skeptics.

They want viewers, plain and simple. And it’s NO secret that the more “unbelievably impressive” the readings are, the more viewers will tune in. So my feeling is always to watch these sorts of shows with a little bit of a skeptical eye, simply because unless you see an entire reading in an unedited fashion, it’s difficult to really judge how accurate it really was.

(I certainly don’t believe anyone “cheats” in any deliberate way, but to omit “misses” and only include the “hits” would certainly be something I’d expect, just because it makes for better TV)

Speaking with John Edward a while back in a small group setting…

He said the real reason he wouldn’t go back on TV when asked, was that he did NOT want to do a “reality based” show on his life, and simply wanted to give readings for an audience in front of a crowd or small group. According to his remarks, the TV executives didn’t think that made for the type of TV most people want to see these days, and are equally as interested in the back story, as they are in the actual psychic readings. (which seems to be the case with most reality TV programming these days… at least the popular shows we all know)

So what does that mean overall?

I say, keep an open mind, but always know that what you are watching is edited. Not necessarily in a bad way…..but any sort of editing, if you are a psychic “snob” like me, changes something about how seriously I can take the information that comes through. But for entertainment purposes…the Long Island Medium is A LOT of fun, and having seen Theresa Caputo do all sorts of other interviews as well, I think she deserves the success, too!

Tips for Choosing a HD 1080p Media Player

[ad_1]

So how do you make sure you are getting the most value when purchasing a HD 1080p media player? Let’s look at the facts.

Media Compatibility

Broadcast TV, DVD movies, and streaming video are almost never 1080p. Having a HD 1080p is not going to enhance the picture any higher than one supporting only 1080i or 720p. The big difference comes when you start considering the latest formats of entertainment. Blu-Ray discs are support 1080p and can take the full advantage a HD which supports 1080p. This only becomes important if your are planning on archiving your Blu-Ray movies onto your HD 1080p, which can be a great choice.

What about your TV and your HD 1080p media player

The other factor you need to consider is your television. Having a HD 1080p player does you no good, if your big screen TV is only 720p. You could still buy the 1080p HD digital player with the plans of being ready when you upgrade your TV.

Video on Demand

Since 1080p is not supported by video on demand systems at this time, due to the large bandwidth it would require, it is not a major consideration when considering your HD streaming player today. This doesn’t mean it is not going to happen in the future. Should you plan for the future, or wait for change? If price was not your biggest concern, it would make sense to get a digital player which is ready for the next generation of streaming media. Microsoft, YouTube, and other services are already planning to offer 1080p.

Now lets look at the question is a HD 1080p player worth the price? The answer is an absolute YES. You will quickly discover the cost difference between a HD 1080p player and a less capable HD digital media player is only a few dollars. Why would you try to save only a few dollars, and then not be able to use it for your future upgrades? If you have any equipment capable of 1080p, your investment in a HD 1080p media player will be well rewarded.

Additional considerations when purchasing an HD 1080p media player

Compatibility with your entertainment system

The more important questions come down to choosing seamlessly integrates with your existing television and home theater system. Choose a HD 1080p which supports video on demand, is also an HD streaming media player, and has all the connection options you need for your equipment, especially an HDMI video connector.

Wired or wireless

A bigger question should be do I choose a wireless media player, or a wired system. This can even become more important with a HD 1080p since you’ll be pushing more data.

Storage of the HD 1080p.

Also, considering your storage options will be critical when buying a HD 1080p player. Storing your Blu-Ray movies onto your HD is going to use large amounts of space. You may want to consider using network attached storage for the ease of expansion and flexibility.

So is a HD 1080p media player the best choice in a HD digital player? To get the highest value from your dollar, and to be ready for all your future needs, no other choice really makes sense.

How Google TV Will Help Photographers

[ad_1]

So what exactly is this Google TV phenomenon everyone is talking about? Google’s services are no longer solely in the domain of their powerful search engine and emailing systems. Their innovative approach to technology has led them to produce Google TV which is essentially an application that integrates the company’s core business product (searching), the internet, multimedia capabilities of a media box, and television. Google TV uses a unique method to prepare the websites to be viewed on your TV, even in high definition if you would like. What this effectively means is that you would have full control over information, downloadable programs, the internet, and other media content such as videos and photographs, all from you’re the comfort of your home television.

Perhaps the most attractive element of Google TV is the fact that it is specifically designed for the television user. Anyone can build a device to give you access to the internet through your television. In fact many other manufacturers have been doing this for years. The difference is Google TV is adapted for finding information on program schedules for a specific channel through the search bar. How you can use this information really sets Google apart from the competition, and the preloaded applications show the faith other companies such as Twitter, Napster, and Amazon have in this application.

The additional applications to customize your setup can be downloaded easily through the program and Google launches continuous updates over the air. Other applications such as Flicker and Picasa can also be installed, giving the user full control of their photo gallery or any photos they would wish to use. Because Google TV can be used with just about any TV, households with high definition televisions can view their photo gallery in HD. To some extent this can be advantageous to a photographer because the ‘cap’ on the resolution of the pictures they would like to shoot is increased. This software really gives photographers an excellent opportunity to showcase their portfolio in a way that they intended it to be seen. Google does not limit what you can access through Google TV’s full browser. Coupled with Adobe’s flash player, anyone with the software installed on their television can view flash content. This means that for videos available on YouTube.com and other video content systems that can be viewed in HD, you can watch them right from your television in big screen.

Weight Loss Help Programs – Where to Get Them

[ad_1]

Need weight loss help? Getting help anywhere—in books, the internet, the magazines, and others—is now easy with the help of the print media, film and   TV   media , and the internet.

Weight loss help books are available in the bookstores anywhere in your vicinity. These books are usually of the self-help variety which can contain tips on how to maintain your regular and/or ideal weight and tips on how to achieve your ideal weight if you are overweight, that is.

Information about the quick weight loss diet programs that are ceaselessly advertised by stars in and out of the TV screens, the health and fitness channels on TV, the weekly or monthly entertainment magazines and even those we encounter in casual conversations with our friends are now printed with in depth and with more details on the self-help books.

To know more about weight loss and the methods employed by majority of the public, it’s best to check with the bookstores or the libraries.

Another source of weight loss help aside from the books is the internet. Type in the keywords: “weight loss help” on the search bars of Google, Yahoo, Altavista, MSN—and other web browsers—and hit the enter key on the keyboard and a number of page titles containing the keywords you entered will come out right in front of your face!

All you need do is sift through the information you get, whether they are significant or unnecessary, and do extensive reading on them. One website on weight loss issues, authored by Anne Collins, compiled many articles that you may find helpful on the subject of weight loss. Aside from that site, there are a few more sites that offer the same kind of services.

All you need do is type and click the search button beside the search bar of your chosen web browser. Also, it would probably be more helpful if you combine both the information power of the print media and the electronic media.

With the combined abilities of the print media (books, magazines, newspapers and etc.) and the electronic media (namely, the internet), the more you acquire information on weight loss that are significant, valid and genuinely backed by scientific studies.

Aside from books and the internet, there are videotapes and DVDs or VCDs that give instructions or information on the many popular methods of losing weight. These visual media are also great source for weight loss help—most especially to those who seek them. VCDs, DVDs and videotapes are usually of the documentary-demonstration type where there is little interview and more demonstration on how the methods employed in losing weight work on the human body. Of course you can also get help from those who have used these weight loss programs and have nothing but compliments and praises on them. Casual conversations with friends who’ve used the popular methods of losing weight can be a great source of information on weight loss.

In this technologically-advanced era, weight loss help is only a few steps ahead of us. All we do is read around!

UK Media Advertising

[ad_1]

ADVERTISING ON UK MEDIA

There are many options for advertising your brand, product or service within the UK advertising marketplace.
Below is a list of the various media options available to you.

Television
Radio
National Press
Local and Regional Press
Magazines
Cinema
Posters

Within each of the above media there are even more options available to you.
However within this article I wanted to take this opportunity to take you through these various traditional media services, and impart my knowledge.
The reason behind this is I am in the process of building a new client portfolio and would like to offer my services to those of you who are interested in promoting your products or services in the Uk, but are not sure of where to start.
Let me also state that I do not intend to make this too technical, and intend only to make available to you the topline information to give you an outline understanding of what can be achieved.

Television

I have written an article on the early days of planning and buying Uk TV advertising which you can read by clicking here.
One of the most important and interesting changes in Uk TV advertising in the past decade, is the launch of Satellite and Digital TV channels in the UK. Which at the end of the day has basically reduced the entry cost level onto TV for many advertisers, it has also created many more viewing and buying options.
The choice and selection of TV channels are now in the region of 200+, but what does this mean?
Basically it means no matter how big or small your budget is, there will be an opportunity to promote your brand or service on TV.
Let me take you through the various options available.

ITV
Can be purchased on a regional basis, and within various regions this can even be broken down into macro regions, making ITV more affordable than you may of envisaged.
Also ITV has a number of national satellite channels ie ITV2,3,4.
Within the ITV1 natoinal and even the satellite channels airtime can be purchased across a number of time bands:

Coffee Time (early morning pre-noon)
Daytime (1200-16.30)
Pre-Peak (16.30-18.00)
Peak (18.00-22.00)
Late off Peak (22.00-)

NB:These time bands are a rough guide for all stations.
So as an example if you have a brand that is targeted against adults 50+, they can be reached by promoting your product or service during pre-noon and 16.30-18.00 (which is a prime time slot for this age group).
Of course dependent on your target market there will be various different time bands and options for reaching your potential customers.

BREAKFAST TV

Is generally between 06.00-09.30 and is operated on a national and macro regional basis by GMTV, also CH4 operate a breakfast service.
Here again dependent on your target market these are ideal for reaching houswives and houswives with kids.
You will note that GMTV carries quite a large number of toy advertisers.

CH4

Similar to ITV though tends to be younger, however is available nationally and by macro regions.
CH4 also operate their own satellite stations +4 etc, which again offer a wide range of opportunities for reaching your target market (or as I say potential customers).

CH5
Available on a national basis.

Satelite/Digital Tv

The options available to you on these stations are huge, so rather than go into too much detail I will be brief. There are channels covering virtually every subject you can think off, from holidays, history, sport etc.
It should be noted though that satellite tv channels can only be purchased on a national basis, though the entry levels will be lower than launching an ITV1 campaign.
I should also make you aware though that ITV1 audience levels will also be higher than the satellite channels.

COMMENTS
It was my intention to keep the above information brief and just to give you a feel of what is available. The skill in understanding this marketplace background is where I come in with over 30 years of background and direct contacts with the media owners.
The research audience data in the UK is highly sophisticated and this can be discussed, should you be interested in advertising on TV,
Before I move on here is a list of the TV comercial sizes that can be purchased:
10′, 20′, 30′, 40′ and 60′ seconds. (the average Uk TV commercial is 30 seconds).

RADIO

‘The theatre of the mind’ as I call it or as known in the industry.
Commercial radio in the Uk can be purchased locally or on a national basis. The flexibility of radio is the benefit of immediate call to action and can be used in any combination with other media or stand alone.
Local radio can be very cheap and a great way to promote any product or service, and add frequency to any campaign.

NATIONAL PRESS
Who said national press was dead, national press still attracts millions of readers day in day out.
The main uk titles are:

Sun and News of the world
Daily/ Sunday Mirror
Daily/ Sunday Mail
Daily/ Sunday Express
Daily/ Sunday Telegraph
Daily/ Sunday Times
Daily/ Independont on Sunday
Daily/ Sunday Star
FT
(there are other titles)

The various titles above reach a wide range of demographics, and can be planned to reach your target market using an array of sizes in colour or black and white. Lets not forget they also carry a wide variety of supplements which cover many topics ie Fashion, Food and Drink, Motoring etc.

LOCAL and REGIONAL PRESS

You will find thousands of these titles throughout the Uk, from free sheets to paid for titles.
They cover virtually every town and city in the UK.
They tend to cover just local news and events, and carry local classified advertising.
A great combination with local radio.
However if you are launching a product or service nationally and using local/regional press, you should compare the cost of a local/regional press campaign with national press. As sometimes you will find the national press option more cost-effective.

MAGAZINES

There are too many glossy magazines to list here, however there are many available within the Uk. Covering every topic and lifestyle you can think of.
From ‘Cosmopolitan’, ‘Homes and Garden’ to ‘Fish friers Gazette’ yes really.
The opportunities for reaching your potential customers (target market) can certainly be achieved with good planning and buying.
Within the glossy titles you can purchase (as an example) 1/4pages, 1/2pages, pages and double page spreads etc.
The key to getting it right is knowing your budget level and creative treatment and finally your target market.
Once this is set it’s just a matter of good planning and negotiating on your behalf.
It should also be noted that many of these titles also carry classified advertising.

CINEMA

Cinema is an excellent media opportunity for exposing your brand or service to the younger end of the market ie 15-25 year olds. Using longer commercials which add great impact.
Cinema can be purchased in many packages from a particular genre to locations throughout the UK.

POSTERS
Or outdoor as we like to call it in the media.
This covers a wide range of media options:
Static posters
Buses
Taxis
Mobile posters
London underground
Railway advertising
Bus stop advertising
Store advertising
Airports
Ferry ports
It varies quite a lot and the opportunities are vast.
The key to any outdoor poster advertising in creative copy. By this I mean if you are placing a static poster wherever it may be, the copy must be short and concise, as your creative message has to be seen and understood quickly and easily, as passers by only have a shorttime frame to take onboard your message.

With locations such as bus stops railway stations and inparticular the underground stations it is possible to impart more copy as your potential viewer has more time to read your advertising copy.

The larger outdoor static sites are an excellent way for promoting your branding proposition.
Wi
th store posters being ideal to reach your potential customers at their point of purchase

Taking a client’s advertising ideas and creating a plan for the best advertising campaign is the job of a media planner. They work with the ad copywriters and the clients, to design a an advertising campaign and then work out the most appropriate medium to advertise on, eg TV, radio or print media? Which channels? Target audience? What time to play the ad? etc. The person that takes on this role needs to be a creative visionary with a good eye for what works in advertising. They will also need the ability to develop ideas that will make an advertising campaign successful. Sound intriguing? Some tips below will give you an idea of what it takes to become a media planner.

Get a degree. Media planning is a professional field which requires a good education. There is no dedicated course to study for media planning but it is a good idea to pursue classes in media, marketing and advertising. These courses will be a great place to start.

The right skills. You will need not only a good education, but the right skills set to become a media planner. A sound knowledge of advertising, including what kinds of products can be marketed to a particular target audience and on what form of media that advertising should be presented eg print media, TV, radio? Media planners should be knowledgeable about brands, and be able to design plans on how to brand particular products. Really good people skills are important also, since you’ll be working closely with both clients and advertisers to create a campaign. You should be prepared for a lot of fine tuning in this line of work to ensure that the brand is aimed at the correct audience.

Work experience. Don’t expect to jump right into a position as a media planner – often the way to get started at advertising agencies is by working in lower-down-the-ladder jobs. If at all possible, get an internship with an advertising agency. The relationship to media planning doesn’t have to be immediately obvious – it is more important to get general experience in the industry. You can work your way up the food chain later.

Apply for work. When you are very familiar with the media and advertising campaigns, then you can start going for jobs as a media planner. Talk to the employer that you are currently with regarding positions available at that company. If you’ve worked hard and have proven yourself, you have a good chance of getting promoted to media planner.

If you seek employment outside of your current company, ensure that your résumé is recent and the cover letter is tailored for the company you’re writing to. List all of your relevant experience in media advertising, emphasize your ability to work with clients and advertising professionals to design a successful ad campaign. Be ready to provide samples of your work. With the right grounding and a good interview, you have no problems getting a job as a media planner.
